Groups at the Women's Mental Health Collective

Groups at the Women's Mental Health Collective reflect our belief in the therapeutic power of this approach. Whether it is an open-ended group or a short-term one, groups offer participants validation and support.

Through these connections members experience emotional growth and relief from shame. They also have the opportunity to share information and to develop strategies for more effective living. Current groups include:

Educational Group for Adult Daughters of Alcoholics

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction

Short-term Educational Group for Adult Daughters of Alcoholics

This group is for women who could benefit from information on the impact of family alcoholism.  The format is a small- group experience.  We discuss the facts of alcohol use, abuse, and addiction, and its effects on the family.  Group members read several short articles, see and discuss two films, and get exposure to Al Anon and other community resources.  Meetings are topic oriented, with some time for personal sharing.  The goal of the group is to provide a cognitive frame which will act as a catalyst for change. Topics include:

•  Denial and detachment
•  Family roles
•  Dynamics of codependence
•  Holidays and family gatherings
•  Strategies for slowing down and having more fun

Time: 5:30 to 7:30 on five consecutive Thursday evenings.

The group is run several times during each year.

Interviewing now for group beginning 9/19/02.
